You’ve heard it first: Snapchat’s next original show will be about “ghosting”, the millennial phenomenon of unexplainably ceasing all communication with people you date. You know, when you are no longer interested in dating that person, you cut off all communication with them in hopes they get the hint and leave you alone. Don’t be too hard on yourself, we’ve all done it.
Snap is introducing “Ghost Hunt” starring comedian Matteo Lane and co-produced by Avalon and Vertical Networks, which already produces a Snapchat Discover channel called Brother. Three other shows in the lineup include Phone Swap, Yes Theory, and Without Limits.
According to Snapchat, the eight-episode series features Matteo helping “a real person track down someone from their romantic past who ghosted them, ultimately bringing the two parties together for some ‘ball-busting and closure'”.
David Martin, CEO at Avalon USA, stated “It’s a groundbreaking platform [Snapchat] with a hard-to-reach audience, and we’ve enjoyed the challenge of making this show for this new medium.”
“Ghost Hunt” along with other shorts illustrates Snap’s increasing interest in creating exclusive shows. These shows tend to run 3-5 minutes in vertical format, of course. It’s important to note that Time Warner has also partnered with Snap and will be spending $100 million over the next two years on original shows and ads. As of right now, Snap aims to have three shows airing per day in its app by the end of the year.
Snap is in direct competition with its bigger rival Facebook, who has several shows in the making that will premier later this year in a redesigned video tab.
